Abstract

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome is a hormonal disorder common among women of reproductive age group, characterized by chronic hyperandrogenism with or without hyperandrogenemia, ovulatory dysfunction, and polycystic ovarian morphology. Prenatal androgen excess results in metabolic derangements in infants born to women with PCOS.
Objectives:
1.To evaluate the impact of hormonal derangements in PCOS women on clinical and metabolic parameters of their offspring
2.to assess the neurobehavioral parameters in the offspring’s of women with PCOS
Methods: The study was a cross-sectional pilot study conducted at skims.30 children born to mothers with PCOS on follow-up of dept. endocrinology fulfilling Rotterdam criteria between ages of 0 to 3 years were selected as cases and children born to normal mothers were taken as controls. Children were assessed on their anthropometric measures( weight, length, BMI, etc) neurobehavioral measures using the vineland adaptive behavior scale and laboratory parameters.
Results: Infants of PCOS mothers had a higher mean weight of 8.87±1.99 vs 7.77±2.54 in comparison to controls. There was no statistically significant difference among cases and controls in terms of their length and head circumference. The BMI among cases was 19.97±1.58 vs 16.39±1.271 which was statistically significant. Mean testosterone levels, prolactin levels were9.32±7.007 and 5.68±3.76 which were comparable to controls. The mean FSH levels and Progesterone levels in cases were 8.29±8.76 and 0.74±1.11 which were significantly lower than the control group(15.16±9.314 and 2.67±2.28). The mean triglycerides levels, LDL levels, and cholesterol levels in cases were 64.55±18.29,86.16±19.57, and 138.07±8.69 which were significantly higher them controls (55.15±11.45, 58±20.67, and 122.7±17.19). Neurobehavioral were there was a significant difference among cases and controls.
Conclusion: Results of our study suggest that infants born to PCOS mothers had higher body mass index as compared to controls. Infants born to mothers with PCOS and lower FSH and Progesterone levels as compared to controls and altered lipid profiles. Neurobehavioral assessment revealed no definite alteration among cases and controls. However further studies are required to see if the metabolic and hormonal alterations persist through the higher ages and further increase the risk of development of significant metabolic diseases.
