Abstrakt

Background: Gastric cancer is most prevalent cancer worldwide as well in Kashmir, mi RNA having a role in diagnosis and prognosis of gastric cancer

Objectives: Determine the expression of miRNA in gastric cancer patients going through upfront surgery, post-chemotherapy and in recurrent gastric cancer patients in Kashmir valley

Study design: Prospective observational study

Participants: Patients admitted with gastric cancer in the department of general and minimal invasive surgery from jun 2017 to july 2019

Methods: 33 patient with a diagnosis of gastric cancer were studied for expression of mi RNA and its role in diagnosis and prognosis of gastric cancer samples gastric tumor tissue, serum and plasma were analysed

Results: The expression of miR-21 and miR-20 is significantly elevated in gastric tumors. In the case of post-chemo patients, miRNA expression showed a significant decline as compared to pre-chemo patient samples. The significant elevation of miRNA such as miR21 and miR20 encourage us to speculate their role in the diagnosis of gastric carcinoma. Circulatory miRNAs might help to predict prognosis in gastric tumours.

Conclusion: Gastric carcinoma exhibits a multistep carcinogenic sequence with a gradual increase in genomic alterations, many non-coding RNAs like miR-21 and miR-20 are upregulated in gastric tumor tissues compared to adjacent normal control tissues. Circulating miRNAs are considered to be ideal as disease biomarkers. The significant elevation of miRNA such as miR21 and miR20 encourage us to speculate their role in the diagnosis of gastric carcinoma. Further, it can be postulated that the dynamics of circulatory miRNAs might help to predict clinical responses in gastric tumours.

Implications: SKIMS has been diagnosing and treating a lot of gastric cancer patients with different stages. The study can further help to diagnose and give a prognosis of gastric cancer patients and can act as a new diagnostic and prognostic tool
