Abstract

Background: DVT is a global health concern with substantial morbidity and mortality. It is often asymptomatic and underdiagnosed leading to long term complications and reduced survival.

Aims and Objectives

To study the clinicoetiological profile of deep vein thrombosis and its relationship with RDW and MPV.

Study design: Prospective study

Participants: 295 patients admitted in both medical and surgical wards including both males and females above 18years of age.

Methods: Patients admitted in both medical and surgical wards over a period of two years who presented with DVT or developed DVT during hospital stay.

Results: Deep vein thrombosis was found more commonly in elderly patients involving more female patients (55.90%) than males. Most common risk factor for DVT was immobilization (32.54%) followed by smoking (26.10%) and malignancy (23.05%) . Most common symptoms were pain, tenderness, warmth/erythema of limb, edema. Proximal DVT was more common than distal DVT in limbs. Among splanchnic vein thrombosis portal vein thrombosis was most common. DVT was complicated by PTE in 15.56% of patients. MPV and RDW values were significantly higher in cases than in controls.

Conclusions: DVT is a common disorder with more prevalence in elderly population. Females are more commonly affected than males. Proximal DVT is more common than distal DVT. It is a preventable disorder.

Implications: Significant morbidity and mortality can be prevented in hospitalized patients with prompt diagnosis and treatment of deep vein thrombosis.
