Abstract

Background and Objectives: COVID-19 pandemic has affected humanity in an unprecedented way. The present study aims to evaluate the various clinical, demographic, biochemical parameters in a tertiary care hospital in Jammu and Kashmir.

Methods: In this descriptive study, data of 1417 COVID-19 patients admitted in a single center from 22nd March to 30th of October 2020 was analyzed retrospectively. Severe illness was defined as a composite endpoint of admission to an intensive care unit (ICU), use of mechanical ventilation, or death or in terms of severity of disease as assessed by radiographic involvement in HRCT Chest and the need of oxygen thereafter. We analyzed the data by dividing the hospital admissions into 2 groups-  group A and group B based on their admission concerning the peak of the pandemic.

Results: 1417 patients were included in this study, 66.05% of them were males (n=936). The mean age of the patients under study was 48.13± 17.68 years. Group A included patients admitted from March to June and group B included patients from July to October. Group A had 409 patients and Group B had 1008 patients. In Group A, 17.11% (70) patients had severe illnesses. In Group B, 37.9% (383) patients had severe illnesses. In group A, 382(93.4%) patients recovered and were discharged from the hospital. 27 patients (6.6%) expired. In group B, 96 patients (9.5%) with severe disease expired, the remaining 912 patients were discharged from the hospital.

Conclusion: Early months of the pandemic presented with less disease burden. The majority of the patients were having mild asymptomatic disease and only a lesser fraction of the patients presented with severe pneumonia. The peak pandemic period was associated with increased mortality and disease burden.
